eBook vs Print Formatting: Choose the Right Book Files

Understand why a print PDF and a reflowable EPUB need different layouts, how fixed layout works, and what to check before choosing editions for your readers.

A printed page stays where you put it

A print PDF fixes the position of words and pictures. The designer controls the line endings, page breaks and relationship between facing pages. This is useful for a physical book with a known page size.

On a small screen, a page-sized image may require constant zooming. A digital edition needs its own reading decisions, even when it contains the same words.

Reflowable text adapts to the reader

In a reflowable eBook, text moves to fit the screen and reader settings. The same chapter can occupy a different number of screens on a phone and a tablet. Use chapter links rather than instructions such as “see page 47” wherever possible.

KDP distinguishes reflowable books from fixed-layout editions. Text-led books generally suit reflowable treatment; image-heavy books may need a fixed arrangement. Confirm the target store’s supported format and features before choosing.

Plan illustrations and navigation

An image that sits beside a paragraph in print may need to appear before or after it on a phone. Keep captions close to the image and establish a clear reading order. Tables deserve special attention: a wide table may need a different presentation.

Test the contents links, footnote links and return links. Look at the first chapter, a chapter with images and the back matter. Increase the type size. A good digital edition should still make sense when the reader changes the display.

Ask for the editions you actually need

A print interior, paperback cover, digital cover and EPUB are separate deliverables. Name them in the brief so your quotation covers the intended editions. A print PDF alone is not a promise of a working EPUB.

If your book depends on exact positioning, show us a representative spread before deciding on the digital format. We can discuss the reading experience and define what will be delivered. The author retains the retailer account and uploads the finished edition.
